Happy New Year!
'Tis the season for reflection, goal setting, intention setting anddddd often soon to follow…overwhelm. We all know how challenging it can be to meet our own expectations, especially if we fall prey to the “all or nothing” mentality of doing a million things right the whole year through or not doing any of it at all.
What can we do instead? This year, let's pick 1-3 areas to focus on for 1-3 months at a time. Once those areas are well established, then consider giving another 1-3 a go. This helps us make sustainable, smaller shifts over time vs overwhelming ourselves into burnout.
Ideas of high impact areas to focus on in 2026;
Fiber intake
Aim for 25g (more or less depending on your calorie requirements) throughout the day
Vary your fiber types by adding a variety of fiber rich foods such as vegetables, whole grains, fruits, nuts and seeds, legumes
Important for blood sugar and lipid management as well regulating bowel movements
Water intake
Aim for 90 oz (more or less depending on activity and body weight)
Stay hydrated throughout the day
Bring a water bottle with you when you're on the go
Adequate movement
Aim for at least 150 mins of activity throughout the week
Vary activity types such as walking, strength training, yoga, tai chi, stretching, and cardio
Nourishing meals
Aim for whole-foods
Decrease processed foods
Aim for balanced meals throughout the day
Sleep hygiene
Give adequate wind-down time
Use dark curtains, sound machines, etc if needed
Set consistent sleep/wake times throughout the week
Connection
Make time for friends and loved ones
Find community you share values with
Spend time in nature
Brain support
Spend time doing brain puzzles
Get adequate exercise
Drink plenty of water
Learn something new, often
Flossing your teeth
Make a daily flossing habit
Floss before brushing your teeth
These are all simple yet effective ways to improve your health that can really go a long way.
